Punk rock band Mutilated Arteries has been seventeen-year-old Becca's world (aka obsession) for the last year. When the band schedules a concert in her hometown, she and her best friend Carli are the first ones in line to buy tickets. The night is everything she expects it to be and more, especially after making friends with the new super-cute bassist, Sketch.Becca's mom warns her not to fall for a rock star because rock stars are always on the road - or they die in a plane crash, like her mom's favorite band did twenty-something years ago. But after the band's tour bus breaks down and they're stuck hanging out in Roizen Hills for a week, it's hard for Becca not to fall for Sketch and his caricature drawings and toxic green eyes.Becca knows Sketch is leaving as soon as the bus is fixed, and she can't be his fan-turned-girlfriend anyway because of the lead singer's "No Girlfriends" rule. Plus, there's something strange about the guys that Becca can't quite decipher... like how they won't reveal their real names, their always-changing odd appearances, and the guitarist's obsession with blood and zombies. Still, Becca wants nothing more than for Sketch to mutilate her heart...but it just might not be in a way she expects.
One thing you have to know about me. I'm a big fan of rock bands. Well, Japanese Rock and Alternative Rock, that is. :P I love The Cab. I went to their tour here in Manila (Trinoma Mall), I think a year ago. But sadly, I didn't get to meet them up close and personal. I was so jealous of the girls who got to meet Alex DeLeon and Alex Marshall (they got same name as me!), they got to hug the members! I am so jealous just staring at a far place. My camera can't even capture them without pix-elating. I was so frustrated but I love hearing them live. They're so much better performing live.
The reason why I mentioned my love of rock bands was that I love Emily Godwin's description and reactions of her characters (Becca and Carli) when they met their favorite band, Mutilated Arteries. I could easily picture them so damn excited about meeting M.A. I am so amazed at Becca for talking to Corpse before they performed. I'd probably be like Carli who'd stare them and my mind melting incapable of speech. That would be my reaction since I'm shy to people, especially people who I idolized. It is just perfect. I feel like I'm also in there, meeting them, talking to them, fangirling. It is awesome that I feel like I met my favorite band too.
Mutilate my heart is more of a contemporary romance. The paranormal elements just came after like 80% of the book. I mean, I do understand that this book got paranormal stuff going on, but it became known later in the book. Unlike other books where from the first part, we know and we could see that there was supernatural going on. In here, it's almost like you are just reading a contemporary romance. It is not a drawback, I find it actually cute and fun. It was such an easy and quick read. It didn't even take me 4 hours or my normal 6 hours to read it.
Although in the last part of the book, I feel like I was short on the paranormal side. It was not yet explained fully about why the guys did what they did. How did they became like that. What's the story behind them? These are the reasons as to why I wanted to read the second book. Like PRONTO.
I recommend it to all who likes bands. It is cute, fun, mysterious and definitely worth your time. You wouldn't even notice the time it took you to read it. :)
